Aguirre is new Belen High School principal

BELEN — Although he’s been one of two cats for most of his career, Eliseo Aguirre’s three children are all Eagles. Aguirre stepped into the role of Belen High School principal in December, leaving behind 21 and a half years of working for Los Lunas Schools. Eliseo Aguirre Belen High School principal “All three of my now adult children — my son and two daughters — graduated from Belen High School,” Aguirre said. “I’ve been a part of the community even though I worked for the other district.” Aguirre’s most recent role with LLS was principal at Century High School for 6 1/2 years.

New PED ruling could hasten prep season

The state’s Public Education Department on Monday put its foot on the proverbial gas pedal. PED Secretary Ryan Stewart said no longer will high school sports teams across the state need to endure the 14-day waiting period to clear COVID-19 protocols before they begin full practices. This development could and perhaps will allow districts like Albuquerque Public Schools to enter their fall varsity sports schedules at least a week earlier than previously planned. “Regardless of (their) re-entry designation, we are now moving into eligibility for (New Mexico Activities Association) participation without the previous two-week waiting period,” Stewart said Monday afternoon.

Los Lunas Rotary Club Dictionary Project pushes through COVID-19 restrictions

LOS LUNAS — The Rotary Club of Los Lunas completed its 14th year of providing dictionaries to Los Lunas third-grade students. Over those many years, the club as passed out more than 10,250 dictionaries. Nathaniel James, Andrew Michael, Monica Merry and Savannah Marie, children of Peter and Melinda Ortega, received certificates of appreciation from the Rotary Club of Los Lunas for their assistance in the club’s dictionary project. Submitted photo While working within the state’s public health guidelines, the club made the necessary plans to keep this signature project going in spite of the global pandemic. Pete Smargon, the project coordinator, marshaled the club’s members and worked with the Los Lunas Schools and School of Dreams Academy to ensure that dictionaries get into the hands of local students.
