It was March 21 last year that Dr. Markey Pierre, vice-chancellor of external affairs/chief of staff at Louisiana State University Health-Shreveport, began experiencing symptoms.
“It was a sharp pain in my back and my neck,” Pierre said, recalling the first signs of what led to her coronavirus diagnosis and hospitalization. “I was having a headache that day and thought, ‘This is really about to turn into an awful migraine.’ I had just picked up my mother-in-law from one of the long-term care facilities to bring her home.”
Struggling with the headache, Pierre brought her mother-in-law inside and went back to the car to take a telephone call, finished it, and then called her daughter, telling her she needed to get something for her headache that was quickly becoming “overbearing.”
