The Universityâs Board of Supervisors voted Thursday to appoint William F. Tate IV as the Universityâs next president. The search for an individual to permanently fulfill the presidential position began in November with the creation of the Presidential Search Committee.
Tate will become the Universityâs first African American president while concurrently becoming the first African American president in the Southeastern Conference.
Gov. John Bel Edwards released a statement congratulating Tate following his selection and acknowledged the significance of the moment for Louisiana.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Louisiana State University chose its new leader Thursday, naming William Tate as the university system s first Black president.
Tate, provost at the University of South Carolina, was the unanimous pick of the LSU Board of Supervisors after public in-person interviews with three finalists and 90 minutes of closed-door debate among board members. He ll start the job as LSU president overseeing multiple campuses and serving as chancellor of the flagship campus in Baton Rouge in July.
“We set about to find a great leader, and we found one,” said Robert Dampf, chairman of the LSU board.

Louisiana State University’s presidential search committee has whittled down the field of contenders to three finalists and excluded the governor’s chief budget adviser from that list.
The committee Tuesday night narrowed its list of candidates for the president’s job to Kelvin Droegemeier, Jim Henderson and William Tate IV.
Droegemeier is the former director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under former President Donald Trump’s administration. Henderson is the president of the University of Louisiana System, overseeing a system with nine colleges and 90,000 students. And Tate is provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina.
