With the effort to remove Gov. Gavin Newsom all but certain to come before voters in the fall, both campaigns are honing their arguments. Here are five takeaways from a combative Sacramento Press Club event Wednesday, where we saw both sides in action:
‘Double mutant’ coronavirus variant that has ‘spread across the globe’ is found in California

SAN FRANCISCO A possibly worrisome variant of the coronavirus first identified in India so new that it has no official name has been found in California by scientists at Stanford University.
Nicknamed the “double mutant” variant by the BBC and others, the variant is sparking concern among some scientists because it contains not just one, but two worrisome mutations in its genetic composition that have been identified among other variants of concern being tracked by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There’s something about Georgia.
Over the past six months, the state has played a starring role in the 2020 presidential contest, the battle for control of the Senate and, now, a debate over voting access in future elections.
Georgia lawmakers passed, and the Republican governor quickly signed, a law giving themselves greater control over managing local elections, placing new requirements on absentee and early voting and barring advocacy groups from providing water or other refreshments to voters facing long waits. State Republicans argue that they’re simply safeguarding voting integrity, though federal and state officials have repeatedly assured the public they have found no evidence of fraud.
