The Ontario government s new stay-at-home order officially came into effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning and will remain in place for a period of at least 28 days to try and reduce the alarming rate of spread of COVID-19, but whether or not the measure will accomplish this goal remains undetermined.
While the new order explicitly states that every individual shall remain in their place of residence at all times unless leaving their place of residence is necessary for one of several reasons, some residents have remarked on social media that the city seems equally busy if not even more since the rule took effect.

With a mandatory stay-at-home order set to come into effect at midnight this evening across Ontario, millions of people are scrambling to figure what, exactly, they can and cannot do under the new rules and through no fault of their own.
Doug Ford s provincial government hasn t exactly made things clear, except to say on Tuesday that nobody should leave their home for non-essential reasons beginning at 12:01 a.m. on January 14 for a period of 28 days.
Retail hours are reduced for non-essential stores, which have already been closed to the public in Toronto for nearly two months, while gathering limits have been lowered to a maximum of five people outdoors all of whom would need essential reasons to see each other, based on what was announced yesterday.

With a staggering record high of 4,249 new COVID-19 infections reported in Ontario this morning, Premier Doug Ford is once again asking residents to stop flouting public health guidelines by gathering socially outside their homes or else. We need people to hunker down and stay home, we need you to avoid gatherings with people outside your household, we need you to practice physical distancing when out, wear a mask and wash your hands often, said Ford in a stern address to the public on Friday morning.

Beleaguered politician Rod Phillips has resigned from his post as Ontario Finance Minister, according to Premier Doug Ford, after being caught in St. Barts amid a pandemic while actively encouraging his constituents to stay home for the holidays and then trying to hide his vacation through a series of sneaky social media posts. Today, following my conversation with Rod Phillips, I have accepted his resignation as Ontario s minister of finance, Ford said in a statement released Thursday afternoon, just hours after Phillips had returned home to Canada at the Premier s request.
