The relatives of Italian citizens who died during the coronavirus pandemic announced Wednesday that they are suing Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Health Minster Roberto Speranza and Northern Lombardy President Attilo Fontana for €100 million ($122 million) in damages.
ROME About 500 relatives of people who died of COVID-19 in Italy said on Wednesday they had begun legal action against regional and national authorities, seeking 100 million euros (US$122 million) in damages. The civil lawsuit, which the plaintiffs presented to a Rome court, is against Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Health Minister Roberto Speranza and the governor of the northerly Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana. The spokespeople of all three politicians did not respond to a request for comment. Italy, the first Western country hit by the coronavirus, has reported seen more than 70,000 deaths from COVID-19 since the outbreak emerged in February, the highest toll in Europe and the fifth-highest in the world. The hardest-hit region is Lombardy, where the first COVID-19 patient was detected on Feb. 20.

Families of coronavirus victims in Italy are suing local and national government leaders for an early pandemic response that they say was riddled with negligence and mistakes.
The families have alleged that Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Health Minister Roberto Speranza and Lombardy regional president Attilio Fontana contributed to over 70,000 virus deaths in Italy.

ROME (AFP) Around 500 relatives of coronavirus victims are suing the Italian state for $122 million, alleging a litany of failures in the early stages of the pandemic, campaigners said Wednesday.
The action is being driven by the group “Noi Denunceremo” (We Will Denounce), which has already filed around 300 complaints with prosecutors in Bergamo, the city in the northern Lombardy region that suffered most from the first wave of the virus.
