Rebecca Dow enters New Mexico governor race, 5th Republican to do so

Staff and wire reports ALBUQUERQUE – State Rep. Rebecca Dow announced Wednesday that she will seek the Republican nomination for governor of New Mexico in next year’s election, becoming the fifth GOP candidate looking to unseat Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham. Dow, who is serving her third term in the Legislature and works as a consultant to early childhood providers, said she’s tired of New Mexico being last when it comes to educational outcomes, child well-being and employment opportunities. The state currently has the second highest unemployment rate in the U.S. Critics have placed some of the blame on Lujan Grisham for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the effects of her public health restrictions on small businesses. Many were forced to close their doors for good over the past year, and the state recently started offering cash incentives in an effort to get people back to work.

New Mexico GOP lawmakers wants public debate on COVID relief money

SANTA FE – Republican lawmakers in the minority of the New Mexico Legislature are objecting to private negotiations with the Democratic governor regarding $1.75 billion in federal pandemic relief and how it will be spent. On Monday the spending was discussed during a closed meeting of a panel of leading legislators, disappointing Republicans. They called for an additional session of the Legislature to debate the funding and the veto. “She is completely bypassing the appropriating body,” Rep. Rod Montoya said following the closed discussion he took part in. Lujan Grisham believes the funds are hers to appropriate, because of the way the federal statute is written.

New Mexico mulls cannabis industry rules as possession becomes legal

Morgan Lee and Cedar Attanasio Associated Press SANTA FE – It’s legal for people in New Mexico to possess recreational marijuana and grow those plants at home as of Tuesday, the same day regulators opened discussions on rules for the launch of pot sales next year. The milestone was celebrated by cannabis consumers and advocates for criminal justice reform who say poor and minority communities have been prosecuted disproportionately for using marijuana. Now, the scent of marijuana no longer is an adequate cause for searching vehicles and property in New Mexico. Recreational marijuana is now legal in 16 states and Washington, D.C., with Connecticut and Virginia set to join the list Thursday.
