In the past week, Dec. 21-27, Florida Department of Health has reported 2,223 new COVID-19 cases in Pinellas County, bringing the count to 43,210. Thirty more residents have died due to the novel coronavirus, upping the death toll to 1,029.
It was a slight decrease in cases and deaths compared to the week before. Weekly case counts and the number of deaths had been steadily increasing. From Dec. 14-20, 2,807 new cases were reported and 46 deaths. From Dec. 7-13, 2,854 new cases and 26 deaths were reported. From Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 1,841 cases of COVID-19 were reported and 23 deaths. From Nov. 23-29, 1,930 cases and 32 deaths were reported.
The countyâs first two cases were reported on March 11, and the first death was confirmed on March 23.

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL The National Weather Service in Ruskin has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for central and southern Pinellas County.
Additionally, a significant weather advisory has been issued for northwestern Manatee, central Pinellas, southern Hillsborough, eastern Citrus, Sumter, Pasco, Hernando, northwest Sarasota and northwest Polk counties until 8 p.m.
At 7:11 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Largo to nine miles west of Fort DeSoto Park, moving east at 40 mph with up to 60 mph gusts with hail possible.

Since Dec. 21, 720 new cases have been reported and three deaths. So far this month, DOH has reported 8,034 cases of COVID-19 and 98 deaths.

With many behind in rent because of the pandemic, Contemporary Housing Alternatives of Florida has a novel way to give its tenants a chance to lower their debts.

Holly Butler, 48, director of property management for Contemporary Housing Alternatives of Florida, Inc, had an idea. What if COVID-affected tenants could get credit for delinquent rent by putting in community service hours? I wondered, How can we make lemonade out of all these lemons? I thought it might just be a kookie idea, but I pitched it, Butler explained.
