BOULDER The University of Colorado Boulder and the Secure World Foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch the Space and Sustainability Initiative.
As the first program in the nation to focus on the role of the private sector and entrepreneurship in the sustainable commercialization of space activities, the Space and Sustainability Initiative at the University of Colorado Boulder will develop norms of responsible behavior for commercial space activities.
With projected revenues of up to $1.1 trillion by 2040, the global space industry is set to grow rapidly. This growth increases consequences and costs, such as satellite congestion and debris accumulation that could endanger future space operations.
Student votes vital to filling numerous UCSU seats
Every semester the University of Colorado Student Union, CU’s student government, holds elections to determine who CU’s next student leaders will be. Controlling over $30 million dollars in student fees, UCSU is the most powerful student union in the nation. They fund and control 12 student cost centers, the largest of which are the UMC, Wardenburg and the Rec Center, and they form and debate policy that guides the campus and its students.
Despite the influence the elected members possess, it is rare for more than 20 percent of CU’s large student population, numbering near 30,000, to vote in the spring election. Fewer than 10 percent of students have historically participated in the fall elections. Two years ago, the number of students voting dipped below 1,000.
The Cheyenne River Youth Project’s
Wo Otuh’an Wi, or “Moon of Giving Away Presents,” finally came to an end this past Friday, Jan. 15. Over the last several weeks, the nonprofit youth organization’s small staff just 10 people sorted, wrapped, and safely delivered thousands of gifts through curbside distributions, bringing Santa Claus to more than 265 families on the remote Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation.
“Christmas 2020 is officially done,” said Julie Garreau, CRYP’s executive director. “We delivered gifts for hundreds of children here on Cheyenne River, making sure that each one received four gifts from his or her unique ‘Dear Santa’ letter, as well as warm winter clothing. And due to the pandemic, we did it without any long-term or community volunteers for the first time in our 32-year history.
