The state of health care in Texas will be the topic of a Zoom seminar hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Comal Area (LWV-CA) on Wednesday, March. 17.
âAs residents of one of the most beautiful areas of Texas, we know why we are one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S.,â the LWV-CA said. âOur state is also one of the most prosperous in the country, so why does Texas rank among the worst for health care, with the highest uninsured rate in the nation?â
Andrea Stewart Roa, health educator, consultant and LWV-Texas health care chair, will review Leagueâs health care positions, which seek âadequate funding for a comprehensive health care system for older adults to ensure a seamless continuum of quality care, and a basic level of health care for the medically indigent, including children of low-income families.â

During Tuesday’s debate between Normal Mayor Chris Koos and challenger Marc Tiritilli, the two candidates found themselves in a familiar place: The upcoming April 6 election marks the second time they ve faced off.
Back in 2017, Koos won his fourth term by just 11 votes over Tiritilli, who works at Illinois Wesleyan University.
But this year, besides the usual issues facing municipalities such as leadership on financial matters and economic development issues the candidates also are in a microcosm of a U.S. political landscape scarred by a divisive presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic and a society facing a long history of police brutality.
In a state where there are roughly 95 men for every 100 women, there is only one female on the Johnson City Commissionâs five-member board.
Commissioner Jenny Brock highlighted that detail at the bodyâs regular meeting on March 4, during which the city issued a proclamation recognizing March as Womenâs History Month.
âAs particularly our young daughters and grandchildren move into the world theyâre going to experience, we need to see more leadership,â Brock said. âIn my last two years of serving on the commission I am going to promote that and try to encourage and mentor women in this community to run for office.â
