Chelsea were held to a frustrating 1-1 result by Real Madrid in a game that showed the importance of being clinical in the latter stages of the Champions League. Chelsea were, by a fair margin, the best team on the pitch and would have been out of sight in the first half if not for some poor decision-making in the final third.

Pat Nevin said Real Madrid star Luka Modric was outplayed by Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount in the 1-1 Champions League semi-final first-leg draw.
On paper, Chelsea could have been outnumbered in midfield, if midfield duo Jorginho and N’Golo Kante had to compete with Real Madrid trio; Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro.
But Thomas Tuchel cleverly gave Mount the instructions to play deeper than usual, often forming a midfield three with Jorginho at the base and Kante playing as right-sided No.8.
Obviously, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic consequently had to play in a front two, but the decision arguably helped Chelsea also won the midfield battle.

Paolo Di Canio had some kind words to say about Mason Mount ahead of the Champions League tie between Chelsea and Real Madrid yesterday.
Speaking live on Sky Italia, the West Ham United legend wanted to highlight Mount’s importance for the Blues despite his youthful age.
“He’s born in 1999 and it seems normal to us because it’s in another league,” said Di Canio.
