Statue of E D White removed from steps of Louisiana Supreme Court

A statue of Edward Douglass White, Jr., a former United States Supreme Court Justice and former infantryman in the Confederate Army, is seen outside the Louisiana Supreme Court on Royal Street in the French Quarter in New Orleans, La. Friday, Aug. 18, 2017. While a justice White voted for the majority decision in Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 upholding the legality of state segregation to provide separate but equal public facilities in the United States and several other landmark segregation cases. A similar statue, curiously enough, was placed in the Capitol by Louisiana in 1955, months after the Supreme Court overturned Plessy in Brown v. Board of Education. The other Louisiana statue at the U.S. Capitol is Huey Long. This statue has controversial past as was erected in 1926 but moved to Duncan Plaza across from City Hall for a time before it was re-erected by Lawyers of Louisiana in 1961. The name Douglas is carved on the podium instead of Douglass.

Jeff Davis Parkway signs coming down; more New Orleans street changes in works

The signs that for decades marked Jefferson Davis Parkway at Canal Street in New Orleans are gone. In the coming days, the ones that remain along the thoroughfare named for the lone president of the Confederacy will be replaced with new ones bearing the name of Norman Francis, a civil rights pioneer and longtime president of Xavier University. That s just the start of a process for City Hall, neighbors and businesses as the change takes place Jan. 1. People who live and work along Jeff Davis must update addresses with places such as the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, the Internal Revenue Service and credit card companies, according to Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office.

New Orleans holiday shows and attractions

‘An R Rated Christmas Carol’ The NOLA Project typically does a play reading of a holiday show, usually an irreverent one. The theater company closes out its year and Podplay series with “An Rated R Christmas Carol.” It includes the familiar characters from Charles Dickens’ classic story, but it’s got more of a Mel Brooks comedy take that’s R-rated, not X, says author and company artistic director A.J. Allegra. The show is a radio play currently available as a podcast on nolaproject.com. JAMNOLA Through Jan. 3, 2021 New Orleans’ first experiential museum, a sort of art and culture fun house that opened in summer, is decorated for the season and there are some holiday extras. There’s a Santa in a giant snow globe, a tribute to Fred Parker, also known as the 7th Ward Santa, and a float from the Krewe of Krampus. George Porter Jr. created a holiday playlist as well.
