Alpena Public Schools to resume in-person learning Monday | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA Alpena Public Schools administrators will be strictly enforcing coronavirus safety procedures when in-person learning resumes on Monday. District administrators said in a press release on Friday those safety procedures will include the proper wearing of masks, social distancing, and proper hand hygiene. It also includes students remaining at home when symptomatic, having a positive COVID-19 test result, or have recently been in close contact with a positive individual. The district will also be offering rapid testing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Thunder Bay Junior High School. The junior high is located at 3500 S. 3rd Ave.

PAPUA SWINE FEVER THREATENS TO SPREAD Submitted by admin on Mon, 08/23/2004 - 00:00 WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, Aug. 22) – An Australian scientist says an outbreak of swine fever in the Indonesian province of Papua has killed more than 9,000 pigs since May and threatens to spread into neighboring countries. Lee Fitzpatrick, the director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Veterinary and Animal Sciences, says cases of the disease are now being found in southern parts of neighboring Papua New Guinea. Mr Fitzpatrick says the disease, which does not affect humans, could decimate the pig populations in both countries. Mr Fitzpatrick says, if left unchecked, the disease could also spread down into Australia and threaten the pork industry there.

ALPENA The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education on Thursday selected a new board member from among two candidates interviewed via videoconferencing software Zoom. The board appointed Nick Brege, Alpena Community College’s director of facilities, to fill the vacant seat. United Way Director and ACC Trustee Joe Gentry also applied for the position. The seat became vacant last month when Richard Matteson resigned after serving on the board for the last 12 years.
