Warning from Cornwall Fire Service over Gummow s Shop A30 barn fire

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has issued an urgent warning over an incident in Gummow s Shop SIX homes had to be evacuated in a small hamlet after two tonnes of the highly explosive ammonium nitrate were found during a barn fire. Residents of Gummow s Shop were warned to keep their doors and windows closed following the fire in a barn on a farm involving hazardous materials. But after the discovery of the highly volatile fertiliser which caused the massive explosion in Beirut last year killing more than 200 people and injuring more than 6,000, it was decided to evacuate. The incident commander told ITV news that because of the volatility of the material, the high winds and smoke plume it was decided to evacuate the six homes nearby.

Leisure centres in Cornwall giving school swimming sessions

Schools around Cornwall are welcoming back swimming lessons after having stopped them throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. A large number of schools are now getting pupils back into the water at local leisure centres after an absence of more than twelve months. So far 59 schools have signed up for lessons run by GLL, a not-for-profit social enterprise that operates under the Better brand. The intensive sessions are designed to help children swim 25 metres before they leave primary school – a national curriculum requirement. St Austell, Wadebridge, Bude and Truro leisure centres have been welcoming school groups since reopening on April 12 and feedback to date has been very positive.
