Iowa lawmakers have passed a bill to criminalize certain types of trespass on agricultural facilities in the latest attempt to stop animal activists and others from secretly documenting activities at large animal feeding facilities.
The Iowa House passed the measure, House File 775, on a 72-20 vote Monday night. The Iowa Senate passed the bill last week on a 35-11 vote, which means it now heads to Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds desk for her signature.
In the House, 15 Democrats joined 57 Republicans in voting in favor of the bill, while 19 Democrats and one Republican, Rep. Jeff Shipley of Fairfield, were opposed. Eight representatives were absent. In the Senate, six Democrats joined every Republican in voting for the bill.
