Breckenridge passes new amenity club regulations on first reading

Photo by Liz Copan / Studio Copan The Breckenridge Town Council unanimously passed an ordinance regulating amenity clubs at resort properties on first reading at its meeting Tuesday, July 27. The ordinance would modify the town code to include a definition for recreation and leisure amenity clubs and restrict non-overnight guest use should it pass on second reading at the Aug. 15 Town Council meeting. The town has described amenity clubs as fee-based day use of amenity areas intended for overnight guests at resort properties, and the Town Council picked up the topic over a year ago following the East Peak 8 development proposal. The town cited parking, traffic and employee housing issues as concerns associated with amenity clubs. In general, an amenity club provides fee-based access to amenities like personal lockers, boot dryers, ski storage racks, game rooms, concierge ski services and parking.

Summit County officials take on roles with state task forces on housing and behavioral health

Photo by Liz Copan / Summit Daily News archive Two Summit County officials have been named to state task force subpanels created to find solutions to familiar issues within the state: access to behavioral health resources and affordable housing. State Rep. Hugh McKean appointed Summit County Sheriff Jamie FitzSimons to the state’s Behavioral Health Task Force Subpanel, and Rep. Alec Garnett appointed Summit County Commissioner Tamara Pogue to the Affordable Housing Transformational Task Force Subpanel. Both task forces were created in this year’s legislative session, which also set aside $850 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds dedicated to housing and behavioral health initiatives. The role of these task forces is to make recommendations to the Legislature on how best to allocate the funds and to come up with policies and opportunities to improve on issues related to housing and behavioral health. The subpanels, composed of appointed experts from around the state, will

Building Hope reflects on successes during the pandemic

Photo by Liz Copan / Summit Daily archives Mental health was at the forefront of everyone’s minds as the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in Summit County, in particular for those at Building Hope, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a better mental health system, reducing stigma and improving access to mental health resources. Building Hope wasn’t slowed down by the pandemic. At the Breckenridge Town Council work session Tuesday, July 27, Executive Director Jennifer McAtamney presented a summary of the organization’s work over the last year and a half. “It is because of the community support prior to the pandemic, back in 2017 (and) 2018 when this community came together and decided that they were going to do something about mental health, that we were able to activate the way we were over the last year,” McAtamney said.
