The Brant County Health Unit reported on Friday a significant increase in new COVID-19 cases.
After 18 positive results were recorded Thursday, the health unit on Friday reported 37 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Even with the uptick, the weekly case count is behind that of the previous two weeks.
After a record 269 cases were recorded for the week ended April 18, there were 245 cases reported for the week ended April 25. So far, through four days of reporting this week, there have been 103 cases, which is well behind the average daily cases from the previous two weeks.

The news also was better Wednesday in terms of new COVID-19 cases, with the health unit reporting 19 positive results in the previous 24 hours, compared to 29 on Tuesday.
For the week ended April 25, the area recorded 242 new cases, down from a record 269 for the week ended April 18.
However, hospitalizations remain high.
On Wednesday morning, a record 28 COVID-19 patients were being treated at Brantford General Hospital, up from 26 on Tuesday. Of the 28 currently being treated, 11 were in critical care and 17 were in acute medical inpatient care.
