WHMI 93.5 Local News : Howell Nurse Seeks Seat On City Council This Fall

March 2, 2021 By Jessica Mathews & Jon King / news@whmi.com NOTE: A previous version of this story indicated Blazejewski has run unsuccessfully for a Howell City Council seat. That was incorrect. She had previously applied for an open seat, but later withdrew her name. We apologize for the error. A former county commission candidate says recent actions by the Howell City Council have inspired her to seek an open seat in the November election. In a press release (attached below), Lee Ann Blazejewski described herself as a Howell native, registered nurse and PhD candidate in public health. She said her decision to run for the non-partisan seat on Howell City Council was made after observing “the council’s recent vote against reappointing someone who spoke in opposition to a past city council proposal.”

Livingston County officials call on state to stop using social factors to determine COVID vaccine distribution

Livingston County officials call on state to stop using social factors to determine COVID vaccine distribution Updated Feb 27, 2021; Facebook Share LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI Livingston County commissioners claim the state of Michigan is distributing COVID-19 vaccines unfairly due to its use of social factors to determine allotment. The state uses a Social Vulnerability Index, a metric from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to establish a community’s virus risk level based on health and economic factors. But Livingston County officials want the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to stop using this metric, and replace it with a “scientific medical factor based plan” that results in uniform distribution.

In the Hunger Games for COVID-19 vaccines, White Republicans work to keep Black Michiganders on the losing side

Covid, Michigan Republicans February 25, 2021 at 10:46 am In Washtenaw County where I live, the COVID-19 infection rate of Black residents is 13%, about the same as the percentage of Black residents int the county (12.3%). However, of the people who are hospitalized, 27% are Black and Black residents are 23% of those who die from virus. Worse yet, statewide, less than 5% of the people who have received the first shot of their two-shot vaccination are Black and fewer than 2% have received both shots. This discrepancy between the people who are most likely to be hospitalized and/or die from COVID-19 is glaring neon sign telling us that vaccine distribution is not equitable. In other words, those who most need the vaccine are less likely to vaccinated, contributing to a public health crisis that makes things worse for ALL of us. This is despite efforts to be responsive to this inequity by using the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) to determine where scarce vaccine su
