The state recorded 111 new cases on Saturday, prompting sweeping new restrictions, with residents of Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool and Fairfield now banned from leaving their council areas unless they are health or emergency services workers. Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour accused the state government of making policy on the run in its handling of the outbreak.

About 7.30am on Monday 19 October 2020, emergency services were called to Simmat Avenue, Condell Park, following reports of a shooting. A man was located nearby with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene. The man was later formally identified as 44-year-old, Mejid Hamzy. Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad established Strike Force Courier to investigate the shooting murder.

Just before 7am on Wednesday 26 August 2020, emergency services were called to Knoll Avenue, Turrella, following reports of shots fired. A 37-year-old man was found outside a home with several gunshot wounds. He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a serious condition and has since been released. Initial inquiries were conducted by St George Police Area Command, before detectives from the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Whymoul.
