My Edmonds News presents the Daily Legislative Report, covering the 2021 Washington State Legislature. On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the House Commerce & Gaming Committee held a public hearing on House Bill 1289. The legislation would reimagine the certification for the development of winery workforce, and also includes distilleries. The House Labor & Workplace Standards Committee gave House Bill 1206 a public hearing. Sponsored by Reps. Lauren Davis (32nd District) and Lillian Ortiz-Self (21st District), the legislation would establish specific workplace standards for staffing agencies and worksite employees regarding training, assessing hazards and information sharing.

Two bills on child welfare earned a public hearing at the Jan. 20 House Children, Youth & Families Committee. House Bill 1194 focuses on parent-child visitation rights and House Bill 1227 focuses on family rights when responding to abuse or neglect allegations. Both bills are sponsored by 21st District Rep.Lillian Ortiz-Self and 32nd District Rep. Lauren Davis.

SPOKANE, Wash. COVID-19 highlighted the disparities and barriers families face, especially for kids trying to attend school online.
Districts have measures in place to help make sure students are learning. A new bill in the Washington legislature hopes to help families and districts work together to ensure that.
Parents and school districts have the same goal: making sure students are healthy and learning.
However, it’s hard to do that when students miss school.
“It’s a two way street right, both sides need to make an effort to understand what’s happening and what are the barriers,” explained Scott Kerwien, the director of college and career readiness with Spokane Public Schools.
