Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) A Taiwanese man who was kidnapped in the Philippines, allegedly over a debt-related dispute, was rescued by local police on New Year s Eve, according to the Philippine National Police-Anti Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG).
The rescue operation was launched after the police received information from Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines, Taiwan s de facto embassy in the Southeast Asian country, on Dec. 30, that a 26-year-old Taiwanese national, surnamed Chen, was kidnapped in Parañaque City, Metropolitan Manila.
Investigation launched into water buffalo deaths in Yangmingshan

Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA) A team composed of veterinarians and animal health specialists is now looking into 24 deaths of wild water buffaloes in Yangmingshan National Park, the Taipei City Animal Protection Office said Saturday.
Among the 24 dead wild water buffaloes, the office noted, 18 died over the past 19 days, including one calf that was found dead Friday evening.
To determine the cause of deaths, the team recently collected samples from the carcasses as well as water and plants from areas where the water buffaloes are most active for testing, the office said.

Taipei, Dec. 14 (CNA) Foreign nationals who entered Taiwan on or before March 21 and have been unable to return home because of COVID-19 can get a further 30-day extension of stay, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) said Monday.
The extension will apply to foreign nationals who entered Taiwan visa-free or on a visitor s or landing visa on or before March 21 and have no record of overstaying, the NIA said in a statement.
The government has previously announced automatic 30-day visa extensions on March 21, April 17, May 18, June 15, July 17, Aug. 14, Sept. 14, Oct. 15, and Nov. 13 to keep from forcing foreign nationals to leave Taiwan as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and travel restrictions remain in place around the world.
Escaped felon and 3 accomplices arrested in Keelung City

Taipei, Dec. 10 (CNA) A wanted felon who was helped break out of police custody in Hsinchu the day before was apprehended Thursday in Keelung City, along with three of the four accomplices who helped him escape.
The felon, surnamed Chi (籍), and three of his associates were tracked down and arrested in the northern Taiwanese city at 1:40 p.m., Hsinchu County Police Bureau Commissioner Wu Jing-tian (吳敬田) said at a press event.
According to the Hsinchu bureau, three of the four accomplices are women, one of whom is currently in hospital after being shot when police opened fire on the suspect s vehicle as it tried to flee the scene.
