Authors Challenge 'Inappropriate' Nature Of Books Removed By Leander ISD

KUT A controversy surrounding reading lists for English class book clubs in the Leander Independent School District drew the voices of parents and administrators. Then teachers and students chimed in and then came the book authors. In an op-ed published Tuesday by The New York Times, author Carmen Maria Machado wrote that preventing children from reading books won t protect them. While our books may contain passages that are potentially uncomfortable, challenging or even offensive, she wrote, exposure to our books is vital to expanding minds, affirming experiences, creating appreciation for the arts and building empathy in short, respecting the adults that the students in Leander, Texas, will soon become.

English Teachers Fight Texas School District From Banning Books

English Teachers Fight Texas School District From Banning Books Are we talking about banning books to the point they re burning books? No. It s not that extreme. We re talking about a book club reading list in Leander Independent School District, which basically covers the northern part of Austin, including areas like Round Rock and Goergetown. Students are allowed to pick a book from a list of 15 options that are selected based on their grade level. The thought behind the list is that students will get to choose a book from something that interests them. Unfortunately some parents have started to complain about some of the books that are being offered.
