As Doctors Decry Gun Violence, Texas Republicans Push To Loosen Restrictions

Scott Olson/Getty Images Doctors aren’t just speaking out in Texas. Take Dr. Joseph Sakran, who was hit by a stray bullet in the throat when he was 17 years old and living in Virginia. That night, Sakran and his friends left a football game and headed to a nearby park to hang out. A fight broke out, and someone fired a gun. The bullet struck Sakran, injuring his vocal cord and carotid artery. 5 Things Texas: Q&A w/Nora Belcher, Medicaid expansion outlook, Rep Michael Burgess - State of Reform

5 Things Texas: Q&A w/Nora Belcher, Medicaid expansion outlook, Rep. Michael Burgess DJ Wilson | Apr 6, 2021 Share this: Congrats to those Baylor Bears who played an outstanding game last night to win the NCAA Men’s College Basketball National Championship. They’ve been a #1 seed or #1 rank often, but have not yet won the national championship. When I feel down about their performance, I’m reminded the United States has been working on health reform since at least the post-WWII era. Maybe Gonzaga’s 22 years of frustration isn’t so long after all.

With this change, Texas can save the lives of new moms Women who lose Medicaid health coverage soon after giving birth are at high risk of bad outcomes File(Michael Zamora / The Associated Press) Childbirth is a joyous time for a mother, but also can lead to medical crises, postpartum depression, and premature death, including suicide. At a time when new mothers are so vulnerable, access to medical resources and counseling that could save lives should be available. However, if a new mother is poor, several post-childbirth risk factors sharply increase, and a key safety net is available for only the first two months after delivery. Medicaid health insurance currently provides coverage for new mothers for just 60 days despite the fact that medical experts say new mothers are at risk of suffering psychological and medical setbacks related to childbirth for at least a year.
