Ron Moody, famed for his expressive features and larger-than-life acting skills, died yesterday at the age of 91.
Born in London on 8 January 1924, the son of a Russian Jewish father and a Lithuanian Jewish mother, Moody was initially named Ronald Moodnick before his name was changed legally in 1930. He is survived by his widow and six children.
Before falling into the entertainment business at 29, he worked in a variety of jobs and studied at the London School of Economics. His first big break was in 1959 in the Leonard Bernstein musical Candide, and it was that part which landed him the chance to play Fagin in Lionel Bart s musical Oliver! What was life like in the neighborhoods surrounding the University of Dayton campus before students began living in the houses? This question is what we wanted students to imagine and answer when we created an AVIATE opportunity this semester. Beginning with houses at Wyoming and Brown streets and working south, students are researching house addresses from 1920, looking up the residents, and then pinning that information to a Google MyMap. By the end of the project, we hope to map both the north and south student neighborhoods.
The student discoveries have already yielded interesting finds. Rogge Street, for example, is one block long and a mix of single-family homes and duplexes. Irena Veisaitė, a Lithuanian Jewish literary scholar and Holocaust survivor, has passed away aged 92. Her family confirmed that she had Covid-19.
Veisaitė s death was confirmed to LRT.lt by her friend Audra Žukaitytė on Friday.
Born in Kaunas in 1928, Veisaitė was a known intellectual, theatre scholar, and human rights activist
Veisaitė s mother died in the Kaunas Getho during World War Two. She herself was later sheltered by a non-Jewish family.
After the war, Veisaitė earned a doctorate in Leningrad in 1963 with a dissertation on the poetry of Heinrich Heine, and was a lecturer at the teaching college in Vilnius from 1953 to 1997.
