Lithuanian ambassador in Donbass: actions on the ground ‘contradict’ Russian withdrawal LRT.lt2021.04.23 18:00 War in Ukraine / AP Lithuanian Ambassador to Ukraine Valdemaras Sarapinas visited the frontline in Donbass just as Russia announced it would be withdrawing troops deployed at the borders. “[Ukrainian] soldier was killed” around the time when withdrawal was announced, Sarapinas told LRT English over the phone from Kyiv. “This is somewhat of a contradiction to the withdrawal concept.” The serviceman was killed along the Donbass frontline where the war has continued since a Russian-led insurgency began in 2014. As Russia built up over 100,000 troops around Ukraine’s borders, the battles in Donbass also intensified. “In February, especially in March, there were more sniper attacks from the other side,” said Sarapinas.
