Local unsung heroes of the Covid pandemic honoured with new Somerset Medal
Dedicated volunteers from Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are among some of Somerset’s many unsung Coronavirus heroes who have been named as winners of the first ever Somerset Medal.
The Somerset Medal has been launched by Somerset County Council to say a heartfelt thank-you to the ‘best of the best’, with the winners announced on Somerset Day.
They include vaccination volunteers, food deliverers, PPE producers, pop-up shop keepers and a whole host of other good Samaritans who all went above and beyond to make sure Somerset kept going during the pandemic.
RAYMOND â âEverything connects.â
It was a phrase that Jill Peterson, a fifth-grade teacher at Raymond Elementary School who died April 7, was known for among the school and community members. Courtesy of Raymond Elementary School

The words â and symbols, like puzzle pieces and Scrabble boards â were scattered about the hallways during Petersonâs Celebration of Life, a gathering of students, teachers, family, friends and other community members Sunday afternoon at the school.
âIt was her biggest saying,â said Andy Weiss, a teacher at Raymond and a close friend of Petersonâs. âIt was how she thought and wanted her students to think in the classroom.â
Entrance To Carrotts Farm Shop On A38 Bridgwater Road In North Petherton. CREDIT: Google Maps. THE gap between two Somerset towns will soon be “measured in millimetres” after plans for new homes were approved. Beechcroft Land Ltd. originally applied to build 39 new homes at Carrotts Farm Shop on the A38 Bridgwater Road in North Petherton, near the town’s cemetery. The plans were refused by Sedgemoor District Council in May 2020, prompting the developer to lodge an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. The council has now narrowly granted permission for the Oxfordshire-based developer to build 20 homes on the same site – just four weeks before an appeal hearing on the original refusal was due to be held.
