Pittsfield School Committee commits to offering virtual academy for one more year

PITTSFIELD — The School Committee has voted in favor of opening a stand-alone virtual school with capacity for over 300 students next school year, but, because of budgetary considerations, it offered only a one-year commitment to the program. The idea of offering an all-online school program in Pittsfield dates to last summer, when districts across the state developed virtual school options for students during the coronavirus pandemic. Pittsfield Public Schools launched the all-online Pittsfield Public Virtual Academy, which accepted students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with a focus on medically vulnerable children, led by Principal Carl Tillona. The offering was popular, according to feedback from a group of parents whose children were enrolled in the program, School Committee member William Cameron said at a recent public meeting, and they asked school leaders to retain such a pandemic-era offering.

Adams, Polito Celebrate Susan B Anthony Monument

Susan B. Anthony is unveiled at the Town Common by members of the committee who raised more than $300,000 for the statue and event. Another party will be held on Aug. 21. See the entire ceremony here.  ADAMS, Mass. Susan B. Anthony was arrested when she tried to vote in the 1872 presidential election. But in 2020, more than half the 158,000,000 votes in the presidential election were cast by women.    We ve come so far, but we have many miles to go, said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito at the unveiling of the Susan B. Anthony monument on Thursday morning.    The bronze statue has been waiting patiently since last fall to be presented to the public. The piece by artist Brian Hanlon consists of three parts: Anthony as a girl reading a book; the suffragette as an adult orating; and a three-tiered step. Referring to this latter part, Polito said that this is a solid step that this girl took and made it possible for all women in this country to be able to vote and have their vo

Women make up just 20 percent of local city councils and select boards How do we change that?

In the town where Susan B. Anthony was born, just six women have ever served on the Board of Selectmen. The irony is not lost on the sixth woman, Christine Hoyt, who first ran for office after the 2016 election. “I got to stand in the birthplace of Susan B. Anthony and cast a ballot for a woman to be the president of the United States,” she said. “That’s when I started thinking, ‘I’d like to see more women, more people who look like me, serving here. How do we do that?’” Quote It s getting better and we have to get going. Each time a woman succeeds, it lays the groundwork for women coming up behind. With every success, you ve gotta reach back and bring someone with you.
