OPENING DOWNTOWN Limbo OPENS FRIDAY, MAY 7 AT THE STATE
Omar is a promising young musician. Separated from his Syrian family, he is stuck on a remote Scottish island awaiting the fate of his asylum request. Ben Sharrock’s second feature is a funny and poignant cross-cultural satire that subtly sews together the hardship and hope of the refugee experience.
Melding a documentary and fictional narrative style, the film revels in expressing the emotional positives and very few negatives associated with leading this freer, more rugged lifestyle while exploring the American West much like in the spirit of early pioneers.
Although Miss McDormand deserved the award for her honest and relaxed human approach to Fern, the real nomads including Charlene Swankie, Linda May, Bob Wells, Linda May and Derek Enders were the true stars of the film and could have held their own in a pure documentary format.
The Blu-ray format shines with a visual clarity and color warmth delivered in the numerous outdoor scenes captured by cinematographer Joshua James Richards.
Disney’s recent acquisition of Starz means a bunch of older titles are launching on the platform this weekend as well. If you want to get lost in Disney Plus for the next two days, here is what’s going on this weekend actually.
Big Shot (Season 1 – New Episode)
John Stamos stars as a temperamental college basketball coach who gets fired from his job and must take a teaching and coaching job at an elite all-girls private high school.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (New Episode)
Set in present-day Minnesota, the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom, Alex (Lauren Graham), set out to build their own team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of youth sports today. With the help of Gordon Bombay, they rediscover the joys of playing just for the love of the game.
Zac Efron, the 2017 film tells the true story of
P.T. Barnum’s (Jackman) many rises and falls during the 1820s and how they lead him to start an inspiring show filled with incredibly talented people who are usually cast to the side. Warning: you’ll be humming the songs for weeks.
Alien
For families who love a classic, the 1979 sci-fi hit
Alien is always a good option. Less with the awkward, cringe-inducing scenes and heavy on the “finding deadly aliens that breed inside a human host while digging around on a barren planet”, it should be a safe choice for mum (assuming she loves a bit of space action drama).
Leaf Arbuthnot
McDormand plays Fern, a widow from Empire, a fictional town in Nevada dismantled by the closure of the local factory. The brutality of the financial crisis is laid bare when she returns to visit her old bungalow: the streets are deserted, her house open to the elements, and the factory still full of equipment, as if glitched in time by some volcanic emergency. After Fern’s work at an Amazon warehouse dries up, she hits the road in her white van, kitted out with a makeshift bed, loo and cooking facilities. She drifts across America in her beloved wheel estate , stopping off to smoke hungrily into sunsets and to pick up whatever jobs will have her: in diners, at outdoor crystal markets, on campsites where she litter-picks with good grace.
