On Books: Glenn Dixon s Bootleg Stardust

Bootleg Stardust. The book centers upon a talented young guitarist from Calgary, who dreams of becoming a rock ‘n’ roll star.  After he’s asked to audition for a successful band called Downtown Exit, he finds himself on an adventure of a lifetime. Not only did Dixon write the book, but he also wrote songs for Downtown Exit’s fictional first album. His band, The Barrel Dogs, then recorded and released the album last year. Glenn is the focus of a free Wordfest event on Thursday April 8, 2021 at 7 PM (MT). On Art: The Hero Material of great Canadian women

k.d. Lang have in common? Not only are they great Canadian women, they are also the focus of a new exhibition by Edmonton-based costume designer Leona Brausen. Leona is paying tribute to the lives, cultural contributions and unique style of each woman using found art and vintage materials. Titled Hero Material, the exhibition is on now in the windows of the CKUA’s Lisa Wilton spoke with Brausen and asked her why she chose to focus on these four women.

On art: Miriam Fabijan s The Many Paths That Have Led Us Here

One year ago, artist Miriam Fabijan had just finished curating a new exhibition when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the closure of Calgary’s Arts Commons. Titled The Many Paths That Have Led Us Here: Stories of Resilience In the Arts, the installation is still intact, but has moved online. The exhibition features work by Fabijan and other ‘re-emerging’ artists who have found their way back to art after taking a break for various reasons. CKUA’s Lisa Wilton spoke with Miriam about what she learned from her hiatus from the art world and what inspired her to put this exhibition together.
