Having been interested in science since my university days, I have been following closely the search for the mysterious, force-carrying Higgs boson, the so-called “God Particle” that gives nonzero mass to the material universe in and around us. If the Higgs did not exist, we would be diaphanous wraiths floating somewhere in the vacuum of space, virtual creatures popping in and out of existence like quarks and leptons, quantum nonentities. Of course, we rarely think about the Higgs, being preoccupied with the business of everyday life and the projects we are invested in. Yes, politics is important, financial considerations are essential, art and music are necessary (or should be), and my embodied wife is the center of my existence. But that is all thanks to the Higgs boson.

âUse it or lose itâ could be the official mantra for muscle mass and bone health as we age, because beginning as early as our 30âs, bone density and muscle tone begin to decrease simply from the aging process. As more and more birthdays pass, staying fit and active becomes more important for older adults to remain independent as long as possible.Â
To help older adults regain or maintain their fit and active lifestyle, ElderCircle has offered nationally recognized Bone Builders since 2009. By 2020, the program had grown to 15 sites in Itasca and Koochiching Counties, all led by a crew of 75 volunteers touching about 300 older adults each year.
CHILDREN enjoyed Barnardo’s first in-person event of the year at Town Gardens. The charity organised an Easter egg hunt and quiz in a bid to build the confidence of youngsters after a year in and out of lockdown. The activity was run in conjunction with South Swindon Parish Council. Youth worker Lisa Randall said: “To see these kids come together has been amazing. I’m really proud of them and it’s nice to see them out of the house. “The parish backed me and we followed all Covid restrictions, so we had to hold it over two days.”
