Orangeville Council unanimously voted to reduce ice rental fees for local minor hockey groups and Skate Canada last week, so they can complete their seasons now that Dufferin is in the red control zone for COVID-19 restrictions.
Dufferin moved out of total lockdown on Feb. 16, allowing sports groups to have 10 players on the ice at a time, without contact.
While the move permits ice time for youth, Orangeville Tigers Girls Hockey, Orangeville Minor Hockey, and Skate Canada couldn’t afford to pay the regular $186 per hour ice rental fee and continue their seasons, without a cost reduction.

In-vehicle passenger road tests were restarted on Tuesday (Feb. 16) in regions under the “red” zone of the provincial COVID-19 framework or lower, which includes Wellington–Dufferin–Guelph Public Health (WDGPH).
DriveTest centres in regions under the “grey” lockdown zone or that still have a Stay-at-Home order in place, such as Toronto, Peel, and York, won’t be resuming in-person road exams.
Strict public health and safety measures will be in place for all in-vehicle passenger road tests to prevent COVID-19 transmission, according to the provincial government.
“As we safely and gradually transition out of the provincewide shutdown and return to the COVID-19 Response Framework, it’s important that we ensure drivers are able to get tested in order to keep our roads and highways safe,” said Caroline Mulroney, minister of transportation.

After significant deliberations, Orangeville Council has decided to wait until a Special Council Meeting on Feb. 17 to decide the fate of local hockey and skating associations’ 2020-2021 season.
Feb. 16 is when Dufferin County is expected to move into the “red” zone of the Province’s COVID-19 framework, which would permit 10 players on the ice at a time in total, however they would solely be focused on skills development instead of playing actual games.
Late last month, representatives from the Orangeville Minor Hockey Association, Orangeville Tigers Girls Hockey, and Skate Canada delivered presentations to Council, requesting a 50 per cent reduction in ice fees so they can complete their season. At that time, Town staff estimated the cost would be $120,000.
