The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) virtually relaunched Barbados’ tourism brand to the world earlier today, unveiling the new brand theme “Little Island; Big Barbados”.
The event witnessed by partners from all sectors of Barbados’ tourism industry, representatives of related Government ministries and private sector agencies, was also followed by an international audience including several people involved in the travel trade.
They were given a detailed presentation on plans to make a strong re-entry into the global tourism market following the decimation of the tourism industry worldwide by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins said as Barbados prepared to welcome visitors again, the emphasis would be on safe reopening and she encouraged Barbadians, particularly those working in the tourism sector, to get vaccinated. Hotel workers still have not received severance

It’s beginning to feel like deja vu for former employees of the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa and some of their colleagues from the Hilton Barbados Resort and Spa as they wrestle once again with their former bosses for outstanding severance pay.
A group of over two dozen hospitality workers lined the entrance of the Hilton’s Needham’s Point property demanding assistance from Prime Minister Mia Mottley, Minister of Labour Colin Jordan and Tourism Minister Senator Lisa Cummins.
Over 100 ex-Accra workers who were laid off at the start of the pandemic more than a year ago, are yet to receive between 25-30 per cent of outstanding severance along with payment in lieu of notice.

There is no doubt that the revival of the tourism industry remains uncertain and will take longer than expected.
For Barbados where, according to the Central Bank, tourism accounts for 17.5 per cent of the GDP while the World Travel and Tourism Council estimates the total contribution of tourism to be around 31 per cent of GDP and supports one in three jobs, the state of affairs is worrying and frustrating.
Virtually every attempt to resuscitate tourism has thus far been severely tested at every turn.
Mere weeks after the US State Department issued a Level 4 “do not travel” advisory against Barbados among 130 other countries despite our low infection rate and robust national vaccination programme, Britain has kept this favourite hotspot for its citizens off the green list of its new traffic light system for the resumption of international travel.

Former employees of the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa and the Hilton Barbados Resort are once again protesting broken promises from their ex-employers regarding the payment of severance,
Barbados TODAY has learned.
And the two groups are to join forces in protest outside the Hilton’s Needham’s Point property as early as Wednesday, a spokesperson said.
The Accra workers, who were laid off since last April near the start of the ongoing pandemic received up to 70 per cent of their outstanding monies after days of a ‘wildcat’ protest at the end of the year.
But they are contending that a promise from the Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins to facilitate payment of the remaining 30 per cent, as well as payment in lieu of notice by March 30 is yet to be fulfilled.
