Lowman S Henry: Showdown looms over job-crushing Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

I recently read an article quoting the chief executive officer of a Pennsylvania-based company advocating for the implementation of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) by saying he would be fine with paying higher energy costs to curb what he believes to be man-made climate change. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative is a proposed multi-state compact with the stated goal of cutting carbon emissions from power generators. This would somehow be accomplished by placing a tax on carbon-based energy providers including the coal-fired power plants that provide family-sustaining jobs to thousands of Pennsylvanians. Of course, there is nothing to stop that CEO from having his company contribute financially to projects that cut CO2 emissions. But, to achieve his policy goal he would inflict higher energy costs on every manufacturer, business, and residential consumer in the commonwealth.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to loosen its grip on Pennsylvania, the state’s economy appears to be strengthening. But an analysis by scholars at the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy shows the rebound has been lackluster, and prospective government policies could retard it further. “Indeed, the latest statewide employment report for March shows there is still a long way to go and that it is incumbent upon commonwealth lawmakers not to throw more growth-stifling regulations at beleaguered business owners that will stymie a return to solid gains,” say Frank Gamrat, executive director of the Pittsburgh think tank, and Jake Haulk, its president-emeritus.

Preserving the Constitution Requires Election Integrity

And rejecting the dangerous engagement of corporate America into national politics. Tue Apr 27, 2021 Corporations and organizations are piling on against the new Georgia election law. It is difficult to understand the basis of their objections. One would probably be on safe ground to wonder if they had actually read the law before objecting to it. The election legislation passed by the Georgia legislature has one major purpose – to protect the integrity of the election process in the State. Given that many unorthodox voting practices were allowed during the 2020 election because of the COVID pandemic, it would be more than prudent for every state to conduct a review of voting practices to assure election integrity. A democracy requires that elections be fair, honest and fully verifiable. Certainly, only legally registered voters should be permitted to cast ballots. Ballots should also be cast in an orderly, timely, legal and systematic manner to prevent cheating

Nonprofit land trusts give low-income homebuyers a chance

Michael Friedrich: Atlanta’s land trust shows how to create affordable housing Nonprofits that buy land, build homes and sell below market rate are giving low-income homebuyers a chance (Monica Garwood | The New York Times) By Michael Friedrich | Special to The New York Times   | April 19, 2021, 3:43 p.m. | Updated: 4:08 p.m. If anyone knows how gentrification has displaced Black working-class residents in Atlanta, it’s Makeisha Robey, a preschool teacher. During her two decades living in the city, she has watched affordable apartment complexes vanish as new developments arise and wealthier, white residents move in. After being priced out of renting in a series of neighborhoods, Ms. Robey, a 43-year-old single mother, became determined to buy a house of her own. “Being able to build some kind of equity, being able to have this home base where your family can come visit,” Ms. Robey said, “I wanted that for myself.”
