Community health workers to be engaged to curb mental illnesses in Thar

As Sindh faces a dearth of psychiatrists, despite the ever-rising number of cases of mental illnesses, the Sindh government, in a first, is going to employ community health workers in Tharparkar district to reach out to such patients.
Sindh Mental Health Authority (SMHA) chairperson Senator Dr Karim Khawaja made this announcement at the concluding ceremony of a three-day training workshop, titled Telehelp services on Mental Health , on Wednesday.

Amid many incidents of harassment of female students at educational institutions, especially universities, a Senate committee in Pakistan has passed an act this month that, once it becomes law, promises swifter action and stricter punishment of perpetrators of harassment through speedy trials of cases.
The 12-member Standing Committee on Education of Pakistan’s Senate or upper house of parliament on 13 January passed the “Protection against Harassment of Students in Educational Institutions Bill 2020”, originally moved by Senator Javed Abbasi (Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz) in the Senate in August last year, to provide a safer environment in institutions and enable criminal proceedings to be launched against teachers and others charged with harassment.

Police on Tuesday arrested nine suspects after the body of a nine-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and strangulated to death, was found in Sindh s Khairpur district, officials said.
The minor girl, a resident of Laung Khan Larik area near Pir Jo Goth, had gone missing on January 9 and her body was found in a banana orchard near her home on Monday, according to Khairpur police.

A sessions court on Tuesday gave the police five more days to conduct the DNA tests of the three suspects nominated in the case of alleged inducement of Dr Maha Ali Shahâs suicide and ordered the investigating officer to submit the final charge sheet on January 9.
According to the IO, the doctor may have been subjected to sexual assault before her death, and to confirm this, DNA tests of her former boyfriend Junaid Khan, Waqas Hasan and Saad Nasir, are required.
