Tax battles expected to dominate Nevada Legislature in 2021

Tax battles expected to dominate Nevada Legislature in 2021 By SAM METZJanuary 30, 2021 GMT CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Nevada lawmakers are scheduled to reconvene on Monday for a four-month legislative session, in which they hope to tackle issues sparked by the coronavirus pandemic none more urgent than balancing the state’s budget. The pandemic’s devastating effect on the economy means lawmakers have less funding to divvy up. It’s left them only undesirable options: They raise taxes, make cuts or bank on a sooner-than-expected recovery yielding more tax revenue than projected. Democrats enter the session with majorities in both legislative chambers despite losing seats in both in November.

Nevada legislative session to start closed to public

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) The Nevada Legislature will limit access to the public when lawmakers convene next month to confront the coronavirus pandemic and rebalance the state budget. Legislative Counsel Bureau Director Brenda Erdoes announced Thursday that only lawmakers, staff and a small number of reporters will be allowed in the building initially. The rules, Erdoes said in a statement, were designed to adhere to the state's COVID-19.
