Fire Breaks Out In Angeles National Forest

By City News Service Apr 6, 2021 ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST (CNS) - An aggressive brush fire scorched its way across 50 acres of wildland in the remote Angeles National Forest today south of Llano, near the Valyermo area, prompting a massive response from federal, state and Los Angeles County fire crews. Fire teams were first dispatched to the area of Big Pines Highway and Big Rock Creek Road at about 4:05 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire quickly blackened 50 acres in the dense forest, fanned by winds traveling at about 20 to 30 mph, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

LA County Set For Looser COVID-19 Restrictions Today

By City News Service US-ENTERTAINMENT-ARCHITECTURE LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County eased its coronavirus restrictions today, joining Orange County in enacting looser regulations now that both are in the orange tier of the state s monitoring system. That means movie theaters, restaurants, churches, museums, zoos and aquariums can go from 25% to 50% of capacity, while gyms are increased from 10% to 25%. Card rooms and family entertainment centers can resume indoor operations at 25% of capacity. The county will still enforce certain rules that are more strict than what the state allows. Most notably, bars that don t serve food which are being permitted to reopen outdoors only are able to operate only from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a required 8-foot distance between outdoor tables.

OC s Latest COVID-19 Data: 248 New Cases, Drop in Hospitalizations

By City News Service US-HEALTH-VIRUS-VACCINE-DISNEY SANTA ANA (CNS) - Orange County is expected to release new COVID-19 figures today after no updates were provided Sunday due to the Easter holiday. The county had reported 248 new cases and seven additional deaths Saturday, along with another drop in coronavirus hospitalizations. Saturday s case numbers represented a spike from Friday, when only 90 new cases were reported, and Thursday, when 81 cases were logged. The number of county residents hospitalized with the virus, however, dropped from 118 Friday to 109, with the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care remaining at 23. OC has logged 251,102 cases and 4,768 deaths since the pandemic began, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency.

By City News Service UCLA Basketball Fans Watch Bruins Play In Final Four LOS ANGELES (CNS) - UCLA students who burned couches and took to the streets of Westwood following the men s basketball team s overtime loss to Gonzaga in a national semifinal game of the NCAA men s basketball tournament are facing potential punishment from the court system and the university today.   Two men were taken into police custody Saturday night in Westwood. The Daily Bruin reported that UCLA students were setting fire to chairs on Roebling Avenue about 9 p.m. The students then walked south on Kelton Avenue but were blocked by police at Strathmore Drive, near Veteran Avenue, according to the Daily Bruin.  

Pedestrian Killed on 91 Freeway in Bellflower

By City News Service Apr 5, 2021 BELLFLOWER (CNS) - A pedestrian was killed on an off-ramp from the Artesia (91) Freeway in Bellflower, authorities said today. The pedestrian was struck about 8 p.m. Sunday on the Clark Avenue off-ramp from the westbound Artesia Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to CHP Officer Dion Conley. No further information was available about the death. A SigAlert was issued at 8:23 p.m., shutting down the Clark Avenue off- amp from the westbound Artesia Freeway. The off-ramp was reopened at about 11:50 p.m. Photo: Getty Images
