LAPD watchdog mulls broad review of discipline process

Print A legal battle is brewing around one of the most secretive aspects of city government disciplinary hearings for police officers as the Los Angeles Police Department’s inspector general mulls a broad review of the process and the police union promises to block him at the door. The looming standoff could shine new light on the administrative process for adjudicating misconduct allegations against LAPD officers at a time of intense scrutiny for police nationwide. It also revives questions about a 15-year-old California Supreme Court ruling that resulted in L.A. and other cities closing such proceedings to the public starting in 2006 drawing a veil over how and whether officers are held accountable for alleged misconduct.

L A plan to cut police, aid poorer areas comes under fire

Print Six months ago, following massive protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez announced a dramatic step at City Hall: She and her colleagues would cut police spending by $150 million. The plan, Martinez said at the time, would be to reinvest funding for vital services, including those that “uplift disenfranchised communities.” On Wednesday, the council took its first stab at deciding where a chunk of that money nearly $88.8 million should go. So far, council members are looking to put much of the money toward nuts-and-bolts city services: street resurfacing, graffiti removal, alley cleanups and many other core city programs.

You d Have to Be Nuts to Follow NYC, LA s Lead on Ending Cash Bail – Nevada News and Views

(Chuck Muth) – Yesterday’s Daily Mail headline pretty much said it all… “Gun violence hits 14-year high in New York City with more than 1,400 shootings – double the number in 2019 – as NYPD top cop blames bail reform for surging violence” “Bail reform” is the colloquial term for “catch and release.”  You commit a crime.  You’re caught.  And you get released back into the wild without having to post bail. New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shea is not a fan… “We have made staggering numbers of gun arrests, taking guns off the streets from felons, doing it almost always without a shot being fired.  But when you look three days later, four days later, those individuals are back on the street committing more gun violence.”
