The field breaks from the gate at Los Alamitos
The first Thoroughbred meet of 2021 at Los Alamitos will begin Friday, June 25.
The seven-day Summer Thoroughbred Festival will continue through Monday, July 5. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday (June 25-27) the first week and Friday-Monday (July 2-5) the second week. Post time each racing day will be 1 p.m.
The season will be highlighted by a pair of graded stakes races – the Grade 2, $200,000 Great Lady M. for fillies and mares (3-year-olds & up) at 6 ½ furlongs and the Grade 3, $150,000 Los Alamitos Derby for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles.
The Great Lady M. will be run Monday, July 5 while the Los Alamitos Derby will be offered Saturday, July 3.

Based on some of my key handicapping angles that comprise class, video tape observations and comfortable post position draws, I look for Ilushion Eagle to capture Sunday s Adequan® Los Alamitos Derby Challenge at Los Alamitos and expect Loco Ocho to win Tuesday s Q-Racing Video Grants Pass Distaff Challenge.
With his 12-1 upset in the 2021 Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs, Medina Spirit became the latest winner of America’s most famous race to have ties to Los Alamitos.
Like Authentic, the 2020 Derby winner, Justify (2018), American Pharoah (2015) and California Chrome (2014) before him, Medina Spirit began preparing for his career at Los Alamitos.
The son of Protonico and the Brilliant Speed mare Mongolian Changa had his first nine official drills locally for Bob Baffert. Medina Spirit then began his racing career here, impressively capturing a 5 ½ furlong maiden contest last Dec. 11.
Baffert, who had much quarter horse success at Los Alamitos before he switched to thoroughbreds more than 30 years ago, has often praised the Los Alamitos surface – maintained by consultant Dennis Moore and superintendent Rick Hughes – since daytime thoroughbred racing returned in 2014. The Hall of Famer has said it is an ideal place to condition his young runners.

Three stakes – including a pair of graded events – worth $450,000 highlight the Summer Thoroughbred Festival at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif.
The seven-day meet is scheduled to begin Friday, June 25, and continue through Monday, July 5. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday (June 25-27) the first week and Friday-Monday (July 2-5) the second. Post time will be 1 p.m. PT.
The richest event on the calendar is the Grade 2, $200,000 Great Lady M. Stakes for fillies & mares at 6 ½ furlongs. Captured by 7-1 shot Sneaking Out in 2020, the Great Lady M. will be offered Monday, July 5.
