75,000 saplings to be raised at Vengatachalapuram

Collector S. Divyadharshini on Monday began a drive to plant 75,000 saplings under Miyawaki technique at Venkatachalapuram near Lalgudi under the urban forestry initiative.
It would come up on 6 acres of land owned by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment. While the workers of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme will plant the saplings, volunteers and environmentalists will bear the cost of about ₹5 lakh for raising the saplings. The drive will be completed within four days.
S. Vaidhyanathan, Revenue Divisional Officer, Lalgudi, said that drip irrigation would be used to raise the forest, which was aimed at the local people to enjoy the benefits of forest in their locality. The Venkatachalapuram panchayat would maintain the Miyawaki forest.
4 held for petrol bomb attack

Four persons on Thursday were arrested in connection with a recent petrol bomb attack on a cinema hall.
Police said five persons, who were under the influence of alcohol, came to the cinema theatre in Boldonpuram around 10 p.m. on Tuesday to watch the ‘second show’. They were denied entry as per management policy. Their ticket fare was returned and the five men left the premises.
They returned around midnight and lobbed petrol bombs inside the theatre even as the ‘second show’ was going on. No one was injured. But the incident triggered panic in Boldonpuram, a sensitive area.

Voters express appreciation for arrangements made by election officials in booths
Voters braved the scorching heat to turn up in large numbers to exercise their franchise in the Assembly election across central region on Tuesday.
Polling passed off peacefully in all 41 Assembly constituencies in the nine districts in the region.
An elaborate safety protocol was in put in place in view of the pandemic at the polling stations. Civic workers checked body temperature, sprayed sanitisers and handed out gloves to voters before they entered the polling stations. Many of the polling officials were seen wearing face shields.
Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur districts record dip in polling percentage

All the nine Assembly constituencies in Tiruchi district have recorded a drop in polling percentage in comparison to the 2016 Assembly elections. Manachanallur recorded the maximum poll percentage among the nine Assembly constituencies in the district. The constituency registered a turn out of 79.63% this time while it had recorded 81.57% in 2016. Tiruverumbur, which recorded the lowest voter turnout of 67.83% in the previous election, was at the bottom again this time with 66.61% polling percentage. The voter turnout in the other constituencies were as follows (with 2015 percentage in brackets) : Thuraiyur (SC) constituency was 76.63% ( 79.66); Srirangam 76.15 % (78.95); Manappparai 76.02% (78.07); Musiri 75.98 % (79.64) Tiruchi West 67.01% (69.75) and Tiruchi East 66.87% (68.12).
