Voters to decide the future of short-term rentals in Cathedral City special election
There’s a special election being held on Tuesday in Cathedral City. Voters will decide the future of short-term rentals in the city.
Back in September, city council voted unanimously to phase out the majority of short term rentals by 2023. In response, a short-term rental advocacy group gathered enough signatures to trigger a referendum to overturn the ordinance.
On Tuesday, voters will see ‘Measure B’ on the ballot.
What does a Yes on Measure B mean?
A yes vote on Measure B will uphold the council s decision to further regulate short term rentals, phasing out the majority by 2023.

Due to a recent change in state law, all registered voters in Cathedral City will be sent a vote-by-mail ballot for Tuesday s special election on short-term rentals, regardless of whether they requested one.
Initially, voters were told that they needed to request a vote-by-mail ballot for the Measure B election on March 2. This differed from the Nov. 3 election, when vote-by-mail ballots were automatically sent to every voter under a 2020 state law.
But on Feb. 19, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 29, which requires that vote-by-mail ballots be automatically sent to registered voters for all elections in 2021. In response, the Riverside County Registrar of Voters mailed ballots to all registered voters in Cathedral City for the upcoming election, according to a news release Friday.
