Deputies said Larry Jenkins, 52, of Winter Haven, was shot and killed by a Winter Haven police officer after Jenkins refused to let go of a gun that was in his pocket. Deputies said Winter Haven police were called to an apartment complex on Orchid Springs Drive and knocked on the front door of the home but no one answered.

‘I’m going to die tonight’: Armed suspect shot, killed by Winter Haven police officer By FOX 13 News Staff Published  Catherine Hawley reports WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Winter Haven police shot and killed Larry Jenkins, 52, Saturday night after they say he pulled a gun on them while responding to a 911 call.  According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the agency investigating the officer-involved shooting, a 21-year-old woman called 911 shortly after 10 p.m. regarding an armed disturbance on Orchid Springs Dr. in Winter Haven.  Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the woman called 911 after she and her husband, Joshua Caldwell, went to Jenkins home to pick up her 14-year-old sister. Judd said the woman told deputies that when they arrived, Jenkins and the 14-year-old girl were at the residence alone.

When the couple arrived at Jenkins‘s home, the teen was waiting outside, Judd said. The woman told investigators Jenkins, who was drunk, tried to hand her husband a gun and asked him to shoot him. The man refused, and Jenkins pointed the gun at his own head and said “I’m fixin’ to get ready to die,” the sheriff told reporters. When Jenkins fired the gun at the ground, the couple fled with the teen and the woman called 911. Winter Haven police Sgt. Joshua Dentel and other officers found Jenkins inside a screened porch, smoking a cigarette and holding his right hand over his pocket.
