Olympics Latest: Rashitov wins taekwondo gold at Tokyo Games
July 25, 2021 GMT
MEDAL ALERT
Ulugbek Rashitov won Uzbekistan’s first Olympic taekwondo gold medal in dramatic fashion by beating Bradly Sinden of Britain.
The 19-year-old Rashitov landed a four-point turning body kick inside the final 15 seconds to turn a two-point deficit into a two-point lead and the featherweight hung on for a 34-29 victory to claim Uzbekistan’s first-ever medal in taekwondo.
Rashitov is relatively inexperienced on the world stage but his success echoes Uzbekistan’s major strides in combat sports, including the Uzbek boxing team’s breakthrough performance in Rio de Janeiro.

KAWAGOE, Japan Bryson DeChambeau tested positive for COVID-19 before leaving the United States for the Olympics and will miss the Tokyo Games. He’ll be replaced by Patrick Reed.
DeChambeau, last year’s U.S. Open champion, becomes the highest-profile athlete to test positive for the virus. He said he was “deeply disappointed not to be able to compete in the Olympics for Team USA.”
Defending Olympic champion
Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics singles competition due to a right quad strain, but remains in doubles, Tokyo 2020 organizers announced.
Murray, who represents Great Britain, was scheduled to play Canada’s
Felix Auger-Aliassime on Sunday, but he was replaced by Australia’s
Max Purcell. Joe Salisbury, who were unseeded, upset the No. 2-seeded French Team of
Pierre-Hugues Herbert and
Nicolas Mahut in a straight sets victory.
“I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe,” Murray said in a statement.
