The House Uptown by Melissa Ginsburg; In a Veil of Mist by Donald S Murray; Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates: paperback reviews

(Faber, £12.99) When her mother dies, 14-year-old Ava is forced to move across the country to live with her grandmother in New Orleans. But Lane, her grandmother, is a pot-smoking artist who virtually ignores her to concentrate on her painting. The fact that Ava reminds Lane of her late, estranged daughter causes her to withdraw into herself. But she’s also in the early stages of dementia, and in her confused state long-buried secrets start to come out. What happened in 1997, the night Lane’s lover, a local politician, turned up at her door with his blood-smeared son in tow? Under these conditions, Ava has to grow up quickly. Loosely speaking, The House Uptown is a crime novel, but one shaped by Ginsburg to foreground the emotional journeys of the grief-stricken Ava and Lane, and written in lyrical prose which is suffused with the author’s lifelong fascination with New Orleans, its dark mysteries and its ghosts.

I’m a social scientist who has worked as a psychotherapist with individuals for more than fifty years. I also have been studying, what anthropologist Lawrence A. Hirschfield calls, “human kinds,” particularly the large group of humans we call men.

Splinters: April 2021 – short essays on the here & now

by Leonie Rushforth I recently received an email invitation to attend a special meeting of members of the Homerton University Hospital Foundation Trust. The invitation came from the Trust Secretary but didn’t contain a link to the meeting I was being invited to attend. Instead I was directed to click on a link leading to a second more detailed letter from the same Trust Secretary, which asked me to follow a link to the Council of Governors website page and scroll until I found the registration link. Why had this been made a little more difficult than it need have been? What was the purpose of the first email, signed by the Trust Secretary – under the umbrella of Civica Election Services (formerly Electoral Reform Services) a subsidiary of Civica Engagement Solutions. CES is a company helping the Homerton Trust, ‘build and support engaged communities’ by providing ‘patient & public engagement software’.
