Jesus Calms the Storm “The need to see yourself in your chosen religion is not a trivial thing,” says Laura James, a New Yorkbased painter and illustrator. “With my work I am trying to offer an alternative to the ‘traditional’ images we find in Western religious art.” Perhaps the most striking element of Jesus Calms the Storm is her depiction of Jesus and His disciples. The Mariners Museum offers free, virtual programs for Black History Month It s not the first time the museum has dedicated February exhibits to exploring Black mariner culture, but there are two new program series in 2021. Monday, The Mariners Museum and Park of Newport News announced it would be offering free, virtual programs in February to celebrate the culture and contributions of Black mariners. The virtual sessions will be held over Zoom throughout the month.  It s not the first time the museum has dedicated February exhibits to exploring Black mariner culture, but with the museum closed for much of 2020, a spokesperson said curators had time to develop two new programs.

As we read the text, we can imagine the story with waves tossing the boat, thunder cracking, lightening ripping across the sky, and sensing the fear of the disciples. We are caught as the text describes the one element that doesn’t fit this story of terror at sea Jesus sleeping through it all. The story ends with Jesus awakening, standing in the boat, and calling out to the elements, “Peace, be still.” And then there is silence.
