New State Department Diversity Officer Met with Praise
Amb. Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley will hold the newly created position.
The appointment of a veteran diplomat to be the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the State Department earlier this week met with a warm reception as the department has had mixed success at improving diversity in its workforce.
On Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Amb. Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, who joined the Foreign Service in 1985 and has 30 years of diplomatic experience, would hold the new position.
The Government Accountability Office reported last year that from fiscal 2002 to 2018 there was “uneven progress” in strengthening diversity at the State Department.

When the COVID-19 shutdown hit in March, fears of permanent small business closures in Summit County abounded. However, in Silverthorne and Dillon, more businesses have opened than closed since March of last year.
In Silverthorne, 28 new businesses have opened since March 1, 2020, and 13 have closed, according to town records. The lists of opened and closed businesses are based on the number of business licenses the town has issued and the number of business license accounts it has closed. Of the new businesses, there were several brick-and-mortar stores, including Just Send It, a packing and shipping store, Windy City Pizza, and Gore Range Sports.

December sales tax reports from Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne provide insights into business trends in each town for both the month of December, which is typically a busy time of year for Summit County, as well as 2020 as a whole.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions that were tough on businesses, Dillon, Silverthorne and Frisco reported slightly higher total sales tax revenue in 2020 compared to 2019, while Breckenridge saw a decline. However, in December, only Silverthorne and Frisco reported an increase in year-over-year sales tax revenue.
In Dillon, sales tax revenue was down about 1% in December 2020 compared to December 2019. However, the town finished the year slightly up in sales tax revenue with an increase of about 0.2% compared to 2019, thanks to a profitable summer and early fall.
