UT Health Science Center at Tyler ranks second in state for wasted COVID-19 vaccine doses
Hospital blames majority of waste on unplugged refrigerator
Wasted Vaccine Doses By Blake Holland | April 1, 2021 at 6:56 PM CDT - Updated April 1 at 7:16 PM
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - From fridges that were too warm to power outages, more than 9,200 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have gone to waste in Texas.
The number of wasted doses is a small percentage of the 11 million doses shipped, but one East Texas hospital has wasted almost 14 times the average waste rate. And it’s made them the second biggest vaccine waster in all of Texas.
When a new mom in Austin found out that COVID-19 vaccine appointments were open in Killeen, she sent her healthy, 28-year-old husband and her 65-year-old mother to get their injections.
Both were vaccinated, despite only one of them being eligible under the priority groups outlined by Texas state health officials.
âI mostly sent them to get vaccines to protect me and for our newborn babyâs sake since [my husband] tends to see more friends,â said the 37-year-old woman, who requested anonymity for fear of public retribution.
Tensions over so-called âline jumpersâ are high as Texas scrambles to vaccinate the majority of its 29 million residents, reduce deaths and hospitalizations, and stem the spread of the virus among highly vulnerable communities of color.
