Flooding impacts area overnight, into Monday

First responders were out Sunday night and early Monday morning rescuing those impacted by the flooding. At approximately 10:40 p.m. Sunday, the London-Laurel Rescue Squad responded to a home on Bullock Road that was flooding with two handicapped occupants. Rescue units used a boat to take the occupants out of the flooded area. At approximately 9:07 p.m. Sunday, the London-Laurel Rescue Squad responded to a vehicle stuck in deep flood water. Rescue units used a boat to gain access to the occupants and then removed them from the vehicle and out of the flooded area. Laurel County Fire Department was assisted on scene.

Corbin man sentenced to 22 years for armed methamphetamine trafficking

Feb 9, 2021 Feb 9, 2021 LONDON — A Corbin man, John Helton, was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison on Tuesday, by U.S. District Judge Claria Horn Boom, after previously being convicted of armed methamphetamine trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The evidence at trial established that, on June 9, 2019, deputies with the Knox and Laurel County Sheriff’s Offices searched the residence that Helton shared with his wife, Anita, seizing over 300 grams of crystal methamphetamine and four firearms, including three that were loaded. Helton then directed his wife to go to his mother’s residence, to get money to bond him out of jail.

Southbound Interstate 75 near Corbin was closed to traffic for approximately three hours on Monday as emergency crews worked to clear a wreck involving a tractor-trailer truck and a passenger vehicle. Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Public Affairs Officer Steve Douglas said the wreck occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. near Exit 29. According to Douglas, Laurel Meadors, 38, of Richmond struck a concrete barrier in the construction zone, causing her 2015 Chevrolet to spin. A 2017 Volvo tractor-trailer, operated by Jaru Young, 41, of Norcross, Georgia, struck the Chevrolet. Douglas said Meadors was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
