The EU has accused Jersey of breaching the terms of the UK’s post-Brexit trade deal in the bitter stand-off over fishing rights in the Channel island’s waters.
The European Commission complained the authorities were imposing “additional conditions” on French fishing boats operating there, in breach of the terms of the agreement hammered out on Christmas Eve.
But in a call with Jersey’s chief minister John Le Fondre, Boris Johnson again voiced his “unequivocal support” for the actions taken by the island’s government.
He said two Royal Navy patrol boats despatched to the area on Wednesday would remain in place as a “precautionary measure”.

In a low-key COVID-style remembrance of the lives lost due to drug overdose, black balloons were hung in front of the Lincoln County Courthouse on Saturday. Black Balloon Day has become a national and international event, bringing awareness to overdose deaths. Diane and Lauren Hurley began Black Balloon Day in remembrance of Greg Tremblay. Tremblay, a father of four, is the son-in-law of Diane and brother-in-law of Lauren and died of an overdose when he was 38 years old on March 6, 2015.
In addition to black balloons, âCan You See Me?â banners were hung displaying the faces of those who have lost their lives to drug overdose which has become the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Grant Thornton sees profit rise after selling wealth advice arm

Accounting giant Grant Thornton said it had managed to increase profit last year despite the Covid-19 pandemic as it benefited from changes made in the wake of problems at Patisserie Valerie.
The company said it had made a £72 million underlying trading profit last year, up by £9 million from the year before.
More than half of this rise came because the company had sold its loss-making wealth advisory unit to 1825, a company owned by Standard Life.
The deal offloaded a unit which had shaved £5 million off the company’s results in 2019.

The coronavirus crisis has engulfed our lives and dominated politics for the last year, but we must not forget the other crisis that threatens our very existence - the climate and ecological emergency.
I recently had the pleasure of hosting a virtual meeting with over 100 people from Hampstead and Kilburn to discuss the urgent need to tackle climate change. It was encouraging to see such high levels of attendance – including from climate groups in Brent – which is a sign of how important this issue is both to our local community and the future of the planet.
