EU accuses Jersey of Brexit trade deal breach in fisheries stand-off

The EU has accused Jersey of breaching the terms of the UK’s post-Brexit trade deal in the bitter stand-off over fishing rights in the Channel island’s waters. The European Commission complained the authorities were imposing “additional conditions” on French fishing boats operating there, in breach of the terms of the agreement hammered out on Christmas Eve. But in a call with Jersey’s chief minister John Le Fondre, Boris Johnson again voiced his “unequivocal support” for the actions taken by the island’s government. He said two Royal Navy patrol boats despatched to the area on Wednesday would remain in place as a “precautionary measure”.

Grant Thornton sees profit rise after selling wealth advice arm

Grant Thornton sees profit rise after selling wealth advice arm Grant Thornton invested millions of pounds to improve its processes in 2019 (Dominic Lipinski/PA) Accounting giant Grant Thornton said it had managed to increase profit last year despite the Covid-19 pandemic as it benefited from changes made in the wake of problems at Patisserie Valerie. The company said it had made a £72 million underlying trading profit last year, up by £9 million from the year before. More than half of this rise came because the company had sold its loss-making wealth advisory unit to 1825, a company owned by Standard Life. The deal offloaded a unit which had shaved £5 million off the company’s results in 2019.

I recently had the pleasure of hosting a virtual meeting with over 100 people from Hampstead and Kilburn to discuss the urgent need to tackle climate change. It was encouraging to see such high levels of attendance – including from climate groups in Brent – which is a sign of how important this issue is both to our local community and the future of the planet.
