New Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Surpass 1,000 For The First Time In Months

Listen to the broadcast version of this story. The Indiana Department of Health reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday. This is the first time the state has surpassed 1,000 new cases in a day since May 14. June’s daily cases reached a pandemic-low average – just 284 cases per day. But cases have begun to climb again. In three weeks of July, the state has averaged about 485 cases per day.  And IDOH reports the vast majority of sampled cases are the more infectious delta variant – accounting for more than 85 percent of new cases. The strain has caused surges in cases across the country and world.

Movimiento Cosecha Finishes 300 Mile Walk For Licenses For Undocumented Hoosiers

Credit Lauren Chapman / IPB News Movimiento Cosecha Indiana marched 300 miles across the state, from Gary to Clarksville, to advocate for driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants. The march stopped in 11 cities as an homage to the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. The group wants lawmakers to reverse policies that bar undocumented immigrants from getting driver’s licenses.  Indiana passed a law in 2007 which tied driver’s licenses, permits and vehicle registration to citizenship and immigration status – aligning with 2005 federal legislation.  Dara Marquez, a field organizer for Movimiento Cosecha Indiana, said these policies target the ability of undocumented immigrants to function in their communities.
