Mon May 17 2021 | Matt DaSilva | Fuel Forty-three years ago, this magazine debuted as the first feature publication devoted exclusively to lacrosse. The periodical was produced by the Lacrosse Foundation, which 20 years later was one of eight organizations that merged to form what was then US Lacrosse and is now USA Lacrosse. These walls in Sparks, Maryland and these pages in your hands possess an institutional memory of the sport unlike anything you’ll find in the lacrosse world. There’s a new logo on the facade and a new masthead on the cover. But rebranding in some ways has resulted in us reinforcing who we are as a national governing body that unites the lacrosse community and as a magazine that since 1978 has inspired generations of lacrosse families to love this great game and leave it better for the next.

Syracuse, N.Y. Loyola vs. Hofstra Loyola (11-2) punched its ticket to the NCAAs by winning its fifth Patriot League championship in seven years last weekend. The Greyhounds have won at least one NCAA Tournament game in seven of its eight appearances under head coach Jen Adams and last made the quarterfinals in 2015. Hofstra (6-6), which earned an at-large bid, is making its first appearance in the tournament since 2007. Livy Rosenzweig paces the Greyhounds in goals (32), assists (42), points (74) and draws (73). Jillian Wilson (23 G, 16 A, 61 DC, 17 CT) also knows how to stuff a stat sheet. Loyola ranks fourth nationally in scoring defense (7.69) and is anchored by goalie Kaitlyn Larsson (7.84 GAA, .519 save percentage). Larsson’s GAA is fourth in Div. I.

In June of 1942, amid Third Reich victories everywhere, Winston Churchill and his chief of staff formed an unusual plan. They would shape a new commando unit made up of German and Austrian Jewish refugees who had escaped to Britain. Deemed enemy aliens, these detainees were given a choice: continue to languish in a detention camp or go fight the Nazis. The resulting volunteers were a motley group of intellectuals, artists, and athletes. Many had lost their families, their homes-their whole worlds. They would stop at nothing to defeat the Nazis. Trained in counterintelligence and advanced combat, this top-secret unit would become known as X Troop.
